Key points

  1. Your GP is a good first step for support with anxiety, depression, stress or other concerns.
  2. A mental health treatment plan can give access to Medicare rebates for sessions with eligible mental health professionals.
  3. If you need help now, call Lifeline on 13 11 14, or 000 in an emergency.

Looking after your mental health is as important as looking after your physical health. If you are feeling anxious, low, stressed, not sleeping or just not yourself, talking to a GP is a good place to start. Your GP can listen, talk through options and, if it suits you, prepare a mental health treatment plan.

What is a mental health treatment plan?

A mental health treatment plan is a written plan that you and your GP put together. It sets out your concerns, your goals and the support that could help. Through the Better Access initiative, a plan can give access to Medicare rebates for sessions with eligible mental health professionals, such as psychologists, some social workers and some occupational therapists.

How many sessions are covered?

With a referral under a plan, Medicare rebates are available for up to 10 individual sessions each calendar year. Your GP will review how you are going along the way and talk with you about further referrals. Mental health professionals set their own fees, and some charge more than the Medicare rebate, so ask about costs before you book. Medicare rules can change, so check the current details with your GP.

What to expect at the appointment

  • Ask for a longer appointment and let reception know it is about your mental health. You do not need to give details at the front desk.
  • Your GP will ask about how you have been feeling, your sleep, your daily life and what support you have.
  • You may be asked to complete a short questionnaire.
  • Together, you will agree on a plan, which may include a referral, practical strategies and a follow-up appointment.

Other ways to get support

A plan is one option among many. Support can also include regular check-ins with your GP, online programs, peer support, community services and looking after the basics, such as sleep, activity, connection with others and limiting alcohol.
