When it is more than being busy.
ADHD is considered when difficulties with attention, activity or impulse control are persistent, more than expected for a child's age, and affect daily life at home and school. Some children are quiet daydreamers rather than disruptive, so their difficulties can be missed.
Assessment looks at your child's history and development, information from home and school, and other possible causes such as hearing, sleep, anxiety or learning difficulties.
- Book an assessment for my child
- Talk it through with your GP
- Tests, treatment or referral if needed
- Follow-up and review
Do I need a note from the school?
It is not essential to book, but information from school is very helpful, because ADHD signs usually show up in more than one setting.
Will other professionals be involved?
Depending on your child's needs, a paediatrician, psychologist or other professionals may be involved, and they set their own fees.
It is never too late to understand.
Many adults are first recognised with ADHD later in life, often when work, study or parenting become harder to manage, or when their child is assessed. Women and girls are more likely to have the quieter, inattentive presentation and be missed.
An adult assessment looks at your current difficulties and your history from childhood, and checks for other conditions that can look similar, such as anxiety, depression or sleep problems.
- Book an adult assessment
- Talk it through with your GP
- Tests, treatment or referral if needed
- Follow-up and review
Can adults be diagnosed with ADHD?
Yes. ADHD begins in childhood, but many people are first assessed as adults.
What if I do not have school reports?
That is okay. Input from a parent or someone who knew you as a child can also help.
Getting ready.
Write down examples of the difficulties you or your child are having, when they started and where they happen. Bring school reports, letters from teachers, and any previous reports from health or education professionals.
Bring a list of current medicines and health conditions, and your Medicare card.
- Book an ADHD appointment
- Talk it through with your GP
- Tests, treatment or referral if needed
- Follow-up and review
Do I need a referral?
Ask reception when you book. Some parts of care, such as specialist involvement, may need a referral from your GP.
How long are the appointments?
ADHD appointments are longer than a standard visit. Reception will book the right amount of time.
Support that fits your life.
If ADHD is diagnosed, management is tailored to you. It can include education about ADHD, practical strategies, psychological support, school or workplace adjustments and, for some people, medicine. Your doctor will talk through the benefits and risks of each option.
Regular reviews help adjust the plan as needs change, such as starting high school, a new job or a busy life stage, without the drive to a bigger town.
- Book a review
- Talk it through with your GP
- Tests, treatment or referral if needed
- Follow-up and review
How often are reviews?
It depends on your plan. Your doctor will suggest a review schedule.
Can strategies help without medicine?
Practical strategies are an important part of managing ADHD, and work alongside other support.
