A careful look, head to toe.
Your GP will ask about your history and any spots you are worried about, then check your skin, usually down to your underwear, looking closely at some spots with a dermatoscope, a handheld magnifying light.
Anything that needs attention is discussed, which may mean watching a spot, taking a photo to compare later, freezing it, or a biopsy.

How often should I have a skin check?
It depends on your risk, such as your skin type, sun exposure and history. Your GP will suggest what makes sense for you.
Is a skin check a guarantee?
No check is perfect, so keep checking your own skin between visits.
Are you at higher risk?
Your risk is higher if you work or play outdoors, have fair skin that burns easily, have lots of moles or unusual moles, have had skin cancer before, or have a close relative who has had melanoma.
In the Upper Hunter, farm, mine and outdoor workers get a lot of sun, so regular checks are worth it.

Can people with darker skin get skin cancer?
Yes. Everyone can get skin cancer.
What should I look for?
New spots, changing spots, sores that do not heal, and anything that looks different from your other spots.
Treated without leaving town.
If a spot needs a closer look or removal, biopsies and minor excisions can be done at the surgery under local anaesthetic. Some procedures attract a fee for consumables, and reception will tell you first.
Results usually come back within a week or two, and your GP will go through them with you.
